SCRIPTURE READINGS

HYMNS FOR THE DAY

ninth Sunday after pentecost

Sermon

A note from Pastor regarding his sermon:

Our lessons for this coming Sunday might be seen as the conclusion of a trilogy of Sundays dedicated to the topic of Christian life and how we should approach the worldly blessings that God bestows upon us each and every day. Last week, we were reminded that wealth and money are powerful temptations and distractions from the life God would have us lead. They are ultimately only temporary, and fail to give us the lasting satisfaction we instinctively pursue.

This week’s readings remind us of what we have received in the Lord’s Prayer: the encouragement to come to God with all of our needs, and the promise that He will listen to our prayer and give us what we need most. We are bold to ask God to give us our daily bread, and Jesus’ words this week remind us that God knows our needs and provides for them.

But our Old Testament and Epistle readings for this week show us what a life can look like when we trust in God for our daily bread and look forward to His even greater promises than temporary or worldly blessings. Indeed, we hope in a new world, and not just a better one!
