The day of pentecost
Sermon
A note from Pastor regarding his sermon:
The events of Pentecost are probably familiar to many of us: the sound of a rushing wind, the tongues of fire appearing on the disciples, the proclamation of God’s mighty works such that each person heard the disciples speaking in his own native language. But our lectionary provides us with an interesting challenge this year: Relating this familiar story from Acts to the story of the Tower of Babel in the Book of Genesis.
Obviously, there is a clear connection in the use of language: where God scattered the inhabitants of Babel by confusing their language, God seems to reverse that confusion by speaking to Jews from around the world in their own distinct languages. What is the significance of this connection, however?
