Sermon

A note from Pastor regarding his sermon:

In His conversation with Nicodemus, which served as last week’s Gospel reading, Jesus informed Nicodemus that “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” This may serve as a sort of theme statement for the Gospel according to St. John, since we see time and time again the surprising work of the Holy Spirit, including the people who hear God’s call to repentance and faith and respond to it.

Last week, we saw Nicodemus perplexed by the teaching of Jesus, even though he was a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews. But this week’s Gospel lesson shows the faith of a Samaritan woman, an adultress, and the large number of other Samaritans that come to Jesus as a result of her testimony. No doubt, the Holy Spirit works through surprising means to bring people to the Word of God and the comfort of the salvation Jesus has won for them!
