Seventh Sunday after pentecost

Sermon

A note from Pastor regarding his sermon:

At first glance, it may appear a little strange that our Gospel reading concerning Luke’s account of the Lord’s Prayer being taught to the disciples should be paired with our Old Testament reading about Abraham pleading with God to spare Sodom and Gomorrah. The three- year lectionary usually intentionally puts the Old Testament and Gospel lessons together, and these stories seem quite different.

But the second half of the Gospel lesson gives us an idea about how the two are related: God encourages us to be bold and persistent in prayer. And that definitely describes Abraham’s willingness to push the conversation with God about whether He will destroy the righteous along with the wicked. This week, then, we learn not only that God encourages us to be bold in our prayers, but also why we can be so bold and so confident that God hears us as we pray.
