the day of pentecost
Sermon
A note from Pastor regarding his sermon:
[Please note that we will be switching to Divine Service, Setting Three this coming Sunday, and for a while after that.]
Some theologians refer to the Day of Pentecost as the “Birthday of the Church on Earth.” This is an appropriate title, since it is on Pentecost that Jesus’ disciples receive the power of the Holy Spirit, that Christ promised He would send to them so that they could spread the message of the Gospel throughout the world.
Some churches, however, take the miraculous events of Pentecost to be a necessary sign of one’s forgiveness and salvation, and practice what they think is the gift of tongues in worship services most commonly contained within their own church buildings. When we pay closer attention to the way the gift of tongues works in our contemporary circumstances, however, we should feel emboldened to share the good news of Christ’s resurrection everywhere we go!
