HYMNS FOR THE WEEK

fifth sunday after the epiphany

Sermon

Please read the note below from Pastor Woodhouse regarding his sermon:

There has been a subtle turn in our readings for Epiphany; one that might have been evident in our readings for last week, and that continues to this week. Our readings have moved on from the question of Jesus’ true identity to the question of Jesus’ work now that He has come to us.

On this point, there is an interesting comparison between last week’s Gospel reading and this week’s Old Testament and Gospel readings. The man with the unclean demon last week knew who Jesus was, and feared that He had come to destroy him. This week, Isaiah finds himself in God’s throne room, witnessing God in His full glory, and he fears that he is undone. And Peter, having recognized the significance of the miraculous catch of fish that Jesus has granted him, falls down at Jesus’ feet in terror, recognizing that he is unworthy to be in Christ’s presence.

But this week, just like last week’s message, we recognize that God has come to His people out of love. He is not here to destroy people for their past sins, but to call them to serve Him. God has called Isaiah and Peter to call to others and share the good news of what God is doing among us!
