HYMNS FOR THE WEEK

2nd sundAY AFTER EPIPHANY

Sermon Starter

A small child from the fertile farmlands of the Midwest was taking a trip west with his parents for the first time. As they traveled through the different states, he was constantly pointing out the many sights that he discovered. “Mommy, look at that!  Daddy, look at this!” As the scenery changed from the rolling farmlands to the dry parched lands of the southwest, he became subdued in his excitement and rather fidgety as mile after mile rolled by of nothing more than brown, barren land. Imagine his amazement however, when they stopped to view the grand canyon. Why would anyone want to look at nothing but a big hole in the ground. As his parents “oohed” and “aahed” at the sights, he wandered around kicking up the dust. Suddenly, he went running back to his parents. “Mom, Dad, you’ve got to see this! It’s great! It’s beautiful!” Looking in the direction their son was pointing, away from the Grand Canyon, the parents were hard pressed to understand what all the excitement was about. “What is it?” they asked. “What’s over there?” Taking their hands, the child said, “Come and see!” He led them over to a small pile of rocks and there in the middle of all the dust and dirt and rocks was a small fragile desert flower. A glorious sight for the child!

Collect of the Day

Almighty and everlasting God, who governs all things in heaven and on earth, mercifully hear the prayers of Your people and grant us Your peace through all our days; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
