Sermon
A note from Pastor regarding his sermon:
Our Old Testament reading this week from Micah closes with the familiar exhortation to “Do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.” These might be the most familiar words from the prophet Micah, and they sometimes provide a great deal of comfort to Christians who see in them a simple description of what a Christian’s life should look like in this world.
But make no mistake! These words are still commands that God gives to us to follow His will… and that makes them a description of the Law and not the Gospel! In fact, if we were to carefully unpack what it means to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God, we would find that these words are no less demanding than God’s statement of His Law throughout the Scriptures. We already know this. And we know that we fail to live up to even this beautiful description of what a Christian life is supposed to be. And so, we must look elsewhere for the comfort of the Gospel in our readings this week…
