The baptism of our lord
Sermon
Please read the note below from Pastor Woodhouse regarding his sermon:
Some theologians (and seminary students) like to find allusions to the Sacraments throughout both the Old and New Testaments. Whenever water is mentioned in the Bible, for example, their minds quickly race to figuring out what that passage might be saying about Baptism. This isn’t a terrible place to start Scriptural interpretation, but it doesn’t always work quite as cleanly as one might hope.
But as we consider the Sacrament of Holy Baptism and its relation to the Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ, Paul challenges us to think of water in a different way: Water, despite its cleansing abilities and its necessity for supporting life, is also commonly seen as a destructive and chaotic force… especially in the Old Testament. Even though this doesn’t always reflect the way we think of Baptism today, it can be helpful to remember these connotations as we read what Paul has to say about the Christian life, too.
