HYMNS FOR THE WEEK

Twenty-fifth sunday after pentecost

Sermon

Please read the note below from Pastor Woodhouse regarding his sermon:

With Reformation Day and All Saints’ Day now behind us, we have only three more Sundays before the beginning of a new church year and another Advent season! And traditionally, as the church year draws to a close, our readings turn our attention to the end times – the end of this world, and Christ’s return for judgment and new creation.

Our readings for this week may not be so clearly related to the end times, though. But the connection is there, if we remember what we heard during All Saints’ Day: We are the ones coming from the Great Tribulation, and the Great Tribulation is here and now. Both our Old Testament and Gospel readings for this week illustrate the difficulties we face in a world corrupted by sin, in which we must toil to provide for ourselves and our families, and in which we often fail. But God’s Word comforts us as we live and work in this life: God recognizes and knows our struggles. He provides for us in time of need. And most importantly, He is in control and has promised us a life in paradise where we will no longer hunger, thirst, or cry!
