HYMNS FOR THE DAY

sixth sunday after pentecost

Sermon

A note from Pastor regarding his sermon:

The portion of Paul’s letter to the Romans that we read this week for our Epistle lesson presents a familiar worry of Paul: Even as he is travelling throughout the known world, establishing churches and proclaiming the good news of the forgiveness won for all of humanity through Jesus Christ… Paul still finds himself failing to do the good he wishes to do, and doing the evil which he hates.

His words resonate with us, even today, as we continue to find ourselves tempted to sin, and failing to resist that temptation, even after we’ve heard the Gospel, studied the Law, received absolution for our sins, and heard Jesus tell us to “Go, and sin no more.”

What comfort might we find in Paul’s struggle to understand the same conflict we experience, that he, too, has identified in himself? What hope can we have to resist sin if our very bodies are corrupted by sin and pull us away from the Word of God?
